Look Stylish, No matter the age

Helen Mirren

Sophia Loren, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Aniston, Eva Mendez. These are women of style, beauty and confidence. They look great at their age. Women in their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s have what it takes. You no longer have to be in your 20’s to be called stylish, sexy and beautiful.
Style and the confidence that comes with it looks better as women mature. Yet so many give up as they step in to these decades. They give up on fashion and beauty and let go of their style. It’s not that hard to keep up, it is way easier than you think.
Here are some pointers to stay on the top of your game no matter what your age is.

Ladies, you don’t need to be shopping for new pieces every month but update your key pieces if you haven’t done so in a while. Handbags and shoes are the easiest to update, they give your existing wardrobe a fresher look. If you wear Jeans they NEED to be current so you don’t loose your cool status. Get a new jacket or trench to throw on the top of an older dress for an instant update.

Don’t understate the importance of undergarments. The start of a great outfit is undergarment. Make sure to update your bras every 6 months or every year the longest. Get fitted for your correct measurements and get the bra that fits. Believe it or not 80% of women wear the wrong size bra. Buy the appropriate underpants for tight pants or skirts. No one wants to see your panty line. There are many options out there, you don’t have to only wear a thong if you are not comfortable doing so. Ask the sales person and they can show you many different options.

Update your hair. If your hair looks EXACTLY the same way it did five years ago, it’s time for a change. That might mean going to a new hairdresser and take some risks. Watch people or cut the pictures out of magazines for cuts or colors that interest you. Ask for an easy lesson from your stylist on how to style your new hair due. If your hair is pass your middle back and reaching your lower back, it’s too long and probably shapeless, get an interesting cut with layers that hits you in the middle back if long hair is your thing. If youre hair is already short that’s great, maybe a new color is your big update.

Matt fabrics are great for body parts you want to divert attention from, leave the shiny fabric for those parts you do want noticed. A matt jersey knit is much better and is going to make you look skinnier if you have a large bust instead of a silk top. If hips and thighs are your problem areas dress it in a matt dark color.

Women over 40 can add some brilliance to their appearance. You don’t need to be in a super low cut tank or a dazzled pink sequined top but you can get a great fitted leather jacket that will make you look hip and current every time you put it on.

Stock up on some accessories. It can dress up any plain outfit. A great bright pair of heels or a colored clutch can bring any boring and dull outfit to life. Same with jewelry; a statement necklace, which is very popular this season or a cocktail ring can take away the attention from a tired outfit.

We have all heard about the little black dress, haven’t we??? It’s true, it cab be your go to piece when you have no time to think or no time to shop. It can look fabulous with a pair of red heels and some gold jewelry. Find the cut that fits your body best. Whether it’s the form fitting kind to show off your curves and your hourglass shape or an A line to hide the hips, find a flattering one for your body and you’ll have a piece you can wear multiple times. Change the look of it by changing your heels or jewelry each time; add a blazer over it or just a belt. You can find a fairly priced black dress and splurge on those colored heels and bags instead.

Stop Gushing over a label and just look at the piece you’re holding. Does it fit? Does it flatter your figure? Is it going to work with anything else you already have in your closet or do you have to add three more pieces to make that one piece of Prada top work? Just because it’s Gucci, Armani or Versace and it’s on sale doesn’t mean it’s a good piece to have. Believe me, owning designer cloths doesn’t give you an instant style. If it doesn’t flatter your figure and doesn’t fit well, you’ll be the talk of the party, for the wrong reasons.

This is for my ladies in their 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. It’s Ok to exaggerate. When it’s hard to get noticed because the body or skin of our 20’s is gone, we need to put the spotlight on ourselves. One way to do it is to wear something bigger in scale. Try a bigger handbag or sunglasses; wear two or three bracelets instead of one tiny one. Increasing the scale of something will make you noticed and will make you look grander and more important-and that, you are…

If you are holding off on buying cloths only because you think you want to lose some weight first, and it has been going on for a while, remember, looking thin is easier than getting thin. Know how to dress for your body and shape, know how to hide the problem areas (God knows we all have one or two) and learn how to draw the attention to the areas of your body you like noticed. High heels always make you look thinner and obviously taller. So there is an instant weight loss for you. Adding belt when you have a thicker waist and mid section will give you a waistline even if you don’t have one and that is an instant weight loss. It’s important to look put- together no matter what size you are. Looking sloppy and wearing old cloths that barely fit will only make you feel worse and more resentful.
